Is this statement accurate when speaking of the criminal class in general, not just terrorists and illegals?

“They fear contact with authority. Any remote or direct link with the government is now a risk…."Seven months after the state attorney general, Anne Milgram, ordered local police departments in New Jersey to question people they arrest for certain crimes about their immigration status and to report illegal immigrants to federal authorities, the rate of such referrals has nearly doubled.

But immigrants and their advocates say that some people have been unfairly swept up in the dragnet because of overzealous enforcement or confusion over how Ms. Milgram’s directive was supposed to be implemented, creating a chilling effect on some immigrants’ relationships with the police.

“This is imposing an incredible human cost on these immigrants,” said Maria Juega of the Latin American Legal Defense and Education Fund. “They fear contact with authority. Any remote or direct link with the government is now a risk for an immigrant.”http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/23/nyregion/23immig.html?_r=2&ref=nyregion&oref=slogin&oref=slogin
Police chasing criminals – what is this world coming to?
It worse than that, they’re being ‘unfair’ to them. Which, according to the Times, apparently consists of not only chasing them but catching them.

  1. true as far as what?

As far as avoiding official contact, yes. Computers have really great memory.

Unfortunately, immigration status is not posted on the NCIS/CJIS data bases, so a routine police ID check will not show legal status.

So i suppose the best answer is that this statement only applies to illegals.

  2. that would be a fair statement about all criminals and finding out about their immigration status is a part of finding out who they are. not unfair at all.

  3. Illegals should fear contact with authority. They are criminals and if they have contact with authorities they might be found out. I think this is great. Enforcement of all laws should be zealous and if the police all over the country were doing their jobs right, most of the illegals in this country should be in jail now awaiting deportment procedures. How on earth is this unfair? It is unfair to the rest of us to have our jobs taken away by the illegals. How on earth do you call it unfair to enforce laws we have had for decades? The illegals fear contact with authority. Isn’t that the way it should be. All people who commit crimes should be dealt with . I don’t care what country they come from.
