Driver who fatally hit Salem toddler arrested
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – An illegal immigrant who drove away after hitting a toddler in a Salem parking lot has been sentenced to one year and five months in prison.

Juan Lopez-Perez pleaded guilty Thursday morning to failing to perform the duties of a driver in a crash.

Defense attorney Steven Walls said his client left the scene Nov. 24 because a crowd was gathering, he feared for his safety and he was in the country illegally.

Before his conviction, the district attorney’s office said Lopez-Perez told witnesses he knew he’d struck and killed a child and that he tried to hide his truck and attempted to leave when police found him on Maple Avenue in Salem.

Neither drugs nor alcohol contributed to the collision that killed his neighbor – 2-year-old Erika Rubi Meza.

Walls said the 31-year-old Lopez-Perez has been married for 16 years, has three children and no prior criminal record.

    This guy’s biggest concern was not the life taken but as the ever so many deportation raises above the loss human life. It sure is strange when an illegal does it, it’s just another day, when something like this is done to an illegal, they are out there in full force, protesting, demanding justice, lawyering up to file lawsuits to asking for millions of dollars, cause their child mattered and not such energy goes into paying American victims what they are due.

  4. 17 months? That is pathetic. He struck and killed a child and then didn’t have the balls to stick around and own up to his actions. But,I guess that is okay because he is an illegal and was scared.
    A drunk illegal struck my best friend while she was out jogging. Left her on the side of the road to die like a dog. Thankfully another motorist got his license plate number and called an ambulance. She is now permanently disabled. The driver got 6 months in jail,no deportation. She got to pay all her medical bills and has to live with her disability the rest of her life.

  6. I agree whole heartily, if they were not present, these people would not be victims and would still be alive! He should receive the death penalty under the law for such a crime. Any illegal who commits murder should be charged with a hate crime and terrorism since they have invaded our country.
